Kelsey Lewis | Farm Manager
Kelsey graduated from Chico State with a degree in Crops and Horticulture. After graduation, she began working full-time as a farm manager and earned both her Pest Control and Certified Crop Advisor Licenses. Kelsey manages their local store and employees, oversees all field operations, and keeps in close contact with local organic suppliers.
In her spare time, Kelsey loves to travel. After high school she spent two months volunteering in Costa Rica and fell in love with the language and culture. After college she backpacked through seven countries in Europe. Kelsey also loves camping, cooking, and playing tennis.
Sherry Lewis | 1st Grade Teacher
Sherry studied at Sacramento State where she completed her degree in Child Development and earned her teaching credentials. For the last 12 years she has worked at Quail Glen Elementary as a 1st grade teacher and specializes in reading.
Sherry has a knack for sewing and is constantly making curtains, table runners, pillows and purses whenever she gets the chance. Last year, Sherry had the chance to travel to New York with her daughter, Kelsey, and fell in love with the city and Central Park. Sherry also loves traveling to the coast with her husband, Greg, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Sunset Ridge was established in 1999. We began with raw land that was covered with chest high star thistle. Together we built our home, barn, and planted over 2,500 trees. All along the way, family and friends have helped us bring our vision to reality.
Greg's parents moved to Newcastle in 1966 from Sacramento looking for a country setting to raise their 4 sons. They still live in the home we grew up in and operate Magnolia Hill Orchard, part of the Lewis family mandarin orchards. My brothers and I all went to Newcastle Elementary School and Placer High School and all still in Newcastle as well. We have a vested interest and love for this community, with our family and friends nearby.
We are a Certified Organic farm. Farming organically is more than a label. It is a way life, the right way to grow the healthiest and most wholesome food possible. For your peace of mind we are committed to nourishing the soil with healthy products that in turn produce healthy fruit. We use no pesticides or herbicides. That means alot of mowing, weedeating and hand pulling of weeds to control weed pressure. We use no synthetic fertilizers. Instead we use compost and other OMRI approved materials to nourish our trees and soil. We have also begun to brew our own compost tea, made from worm castings. This 'tea' is applied as a foliar spray on the leaves of trees and as a soil drench to stimulate the growth and development of microbial activity in the soil.
We consider it a privilege to partner with the earth, sun and Creator to grow sweet and nutritious mandarins that we can share with you and your family.
Greg Lewis | Owner
Greg has lived in Newcastle since the age of 10 when his parents, Loren and Barbara Lewis, moved from Sacramento. His father worked as a Welding Instructor at Placer High and his mother worked as a teacher at Newcastle Elementary. Greg graduated from Chico State with a degree in Kinesiology and continued to earn his Masters in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary.
After Greg's dad had a stroke in 1997 he began managing his parents mandarin farm and shortly there after launched out developed his own farm. In 1999 he began Sunset Ridge and built their home, barn, planted the orchard, and developed the orchard from the ground up...something of a modern day "homestead" project. Their home grown citrus is shipped nation-wide in the winter and provides locally sourced organic fruit to CSA shareholders in the summer. When Greg is not farming he loves to backpack, kayak, and fish with his four kids and spend time with his wife and grandchildren.
